Spring and Hope Spring Eternal

Finally, a warm, sunny day!! Everyone has
been so tired of this winter weather, and so
ready to see some signs of spring. I found
some today, on a nice afternoon walk.
The hickory nuts on the ground were the
signs of the presence of the squirrels, and
the food they enjoyed all winter. When my
children were small, they used to pick these
up, and sail them as boats in the bath tub.
The tiny red blossoms were on one of my
favorite trees on our whole property. I don't
even know what kind of tree it is, but it is
always one of the first to bloom out. (my
husband says it is a maple ) As I
approached it today, you could hear the
buzzing of the thousands of bees, flitting from
one red flower to the next.
And on my way back, I spied the lone little
daffodil, peaking out among the dried, brown
grass in the pasture. Ah, spring must be on
its' way!
And of course, I was accompanied on my
walk today by the three musketeers: Huey,
Dewey, and Louie. It wasn't even hot, and
yet they wanted to hide in the shade of that
big maple tree to avoid the sunshine. They
stayed with me the whole way, about a mile
altogether. But they were wiped out when
we reached the house, and stretched out on
the cool concrete.
Signs of spring...I am so ready.

Shaping Up

Been drawing more of this rhino...he is starting
to shape up. I will be finished in a couple of days.
He still doesn't have a title...I have had one
response so far. I would love to hear some more.
My daughter suggested I post it on Facebook;
I will try that. $25 is up for grabs...think up a great
title!

More Rhino Without a Name

Still working on my no-name rhino. I
would like some suggestions from you.
I will give $25 for the winning title for this
drawing...see previous post.

As for colored pencil drawings...it is a long
process of layering. The lightest colors go
down first, and then the successive layers of
color are added, getting darker as you go.
They are transparent, so the underlying
colors show through. It is very theraputic;
I can get lost in the details. It is also a good
past time for these cold, dreary last days of
winter!

Remember to try giving this animal a title!

Name the Rhino

I am still working on this drawing of the
rhino, with the intention of entering it in a
competition soon. I usually have the title in
mind, and I really love catchy ones. But I don't
really have one for this. So I thought, I would
let you decide. I will have a contest to name the
Rhino! I will take suggestions here on the blog,
or by email, and I will give $25 to the winning
title! So, put your thinking cap on, and come up
with something really clever... You have till I am
finished with the drawing, and I will post my progress.
Can't wait to see what you all come up with.

High in the Mountains

This is my 699th post! wow...
These are two of the recent photos I took
during my trip to Utah. I have added the
scriptures from Psalms to them. I have to
send a couple of prints to our snowmobile
guide..I promised him I would. I laughed
because I told him I would email them, and
he said he didn't even have a computer!
Who doesn't have a computer...I guess 51
year old snowmobile guides in Park City
Utah!

More Competition

In the spring, there are always several shows
that I manage to enter. The CPSA (colored pencil
society of America) show deadline is March 31. I
decided I would try to finish this drawing of this
rhino in time.

I took this photo at the San Diego Zoo a couple of
years ago. The CPSA has been having issues with
artists using other people's photos as references for
their work. It has been the subject of a great deal of
discussion. I don't ever have that problem: I take so
many photographs, I will never run out of subject
matter!!

You can look up the CPSA website, and see some of the
fine work that artists submit. There is some really
amazing stuff. I hope this rhino will get to join the ranks.

Show Time...CAG Alexandria

The Contemporary Artists' Guild of
Alexandria, LA, had their opening reception
today for their annual exhibit at the Capital
One Bank in downtown Alexandria. I had
two pieces in the show: two photos on canvas
that I had taken in Costa Rica. "Behind the Falls"
was taken from behind a waterfall that I had
hiked up to, and was shot through the rushing
water, and "Got Coffee" is a pic of some open
coffee bags of coffee beans in a warehouse at the
Doka Plantation. I was very pleased that my
waterfall photo won second place! The other
photo is my friend JoAnne and her Sunflower
painting, along with the judge, Jim Harrison.
This was the first time I had entered
any of my photography; I usually enter a painting
or a colored pencil drawing. It was nice to know
that my photography could win as well. It was a great day!

More Mountain Snow

The top photo is the reflection in the goggles
of one of the snow mobile guides, and that is
me taking the photo...pretty cool. The other
two are just the beautiful scenery that we
saw along the way. The aspen trees were
everywhere, and the evergreens were
scattered among them; makes a nice contrast.
The mountain scene was taken from the highest
point that we reached. It was the backside of
one of the ski resorts in the area. Really beautiful..

Fun in the Sun and Snow

During my trip to Utah, we were able to go
snowmobiling (is that a word?!) It was a
beautiful day; the sun was out, and it really
wasn't too cold. Our guide, Vince, took us
way up into the mountains behind some of
the ski areas outside of Salt Lake City.
There were only four of us in the group: my
friend, Roxanne, and I, and a young couple
from Utah. They were newlyweds, and they
rode one snowmobile together. The girl was
originally from San Antonio, and her parents
live close to Roxanne's mom! It really is a
small world. We all had a great time. But I
was exhausted by the end of the 3 hour trip...
maybe being 52 has something to do with that!

Back from the Snow

I am back from my trip to Utah. I got to see
my good friend, do some sight-seeing, take some
great snow photos, and relax a little.
I am going through the pics, and will be posting
some of my favorites. I will also be adding some
scriptures and verses to some of them, and including
them in my "GloryBee Graphics" collection. Will
post them soon, too. Good to be home...

The Season is Over

Around Winnfield, hunting is literally a way of
life for a lot of men. There are those who plan
their vacation times around the season, and many
who are self-employed, will turn work down during
deer hunting season. My husband did hunt when
he was younger, but he does not participate anymore.
But I know lots of husbands who have the malady
indicated by today's "RiddlePic". And the season is
over once again till next fall. So now, instead of
actually shooting at the deer, they will be working on
their stands, planting grass, clearing brush, etc...you
get the idea.

The Last of the Snow

The snow has come and gone...it sure was
beautiful. This was the scene as I made it
home yesterday, and the last of the snow was
still on the ground. Today, it had all melted.
But I am leaving Monday morning to fly to
Utah where I hope to see more, along with
some great mountains and scenery..and enjoy
the good company of one of my dearest friends.
I am sure we will have a great time. Will try to
post some pics as I go.

Batter Up

Here's another "RiddlePic"...this is one of those
creatures that I am not quite sure about drawing.
I didn't want him to be too menacing...coming to
"suck your blood"...but I wanted you to know
what it was! So here is the cuddlier version.

I will give something away again at the end of the
month. Will have to decide and let you know.

Snow Day

Wow! this is what I woke up to today...lots of fluffy
white stuff. We are so not used to this kind of weather,
but it is beautiful. The irony is that I have already
planned a trip up to Utah next week...just to take some
snow pictures!! too funny

"ZZZZZZZZZZZZ"...

I am still doing some of these "RiddlePics". And
I get such a kick out of my extremely left-brained
husband trying to guess them. He just can't. So,
you can rule out his guess of "four sheep" for this
one. If you need a hint, I am getting really sleepy
right now, and I think I'll go on to bed!

"RiddlePic" Winner!

My blog giveaway for January was an original
"RiddlePic" (one of my word puzzle drawings).
Today, Chesney came by to pick up her favorite
one..."dog house". She said something about
putting it where her husband would see it?!
Anyway, I hope it works for her!!
Thanks Chesney for being a follower.
You can be eligible for giveaways, too. Just sign
up to be a follower. You don't have to blog or
write anything...all you have to do is check in
every so often, and see what is going on. I draw
someone's name once a month, and give away
some of my artwork. So sign up today!

Photo Op

This great photo was in the Alexandria Times
newspaper. A lot of the comments I have
heard about the game center around this moment
after the game. Everything I have heard about
Brees seems to be positive. It is refreshing that
the good guys got to finish first this time!

The Saints....Dat's Who

WooHoo! Didn't they do us proud?! It was
a fun time down in the city. These are just
a few pics from the quarter today. It was
kinda quiet this morning (everyone was still
asleep or hung over?!) Anyway, as we were
leaving town, we passed the crowds gathering
at the airport. I understand they received
quite a welcome home.
A good time was had by all....

All Tied Up

Some of you will remember that we decorate
hogs in our town to help promote Uncle Earl's
Hog Dog Trials that are coming up in March.
Here's a hog RiddlePic...in fact, I did my concrete
pig like this 2 years ago.
I finished my RiddlePics book today, and ordered
them. They should be here in about 2 weeks.
I will let you know how much they are when they
get here. If anyone is interested in buying one,
you can let me know.
I am going south for a Super Bowl party tomorrow,
and I do hope the Saints win, mostly for those
New Orleans fans. They have been through so much,
and this would mean everything to them. I will be
rooting for them!

Indispensable

The original RiddlePic that I did of this one
was one of the viewer's favorites. I guess
everyone has some experience with this
stuff. It has been known to fix anything and
everything. Good to have around...

Been There Lately?

I know we have all been here at one time
or another. I am currently out of mine...
I am working on getting these RiddlePics into
book form. I started tonight, and should be
done sometime next week. It is also time for
all the spring juried shows, and I am getting
things together to enter several of them.
Maybe there will be some "good luck" for my
art this year.

A little Monkey Business

I am certainly not a mechanic...I just remember my
dad and brothers asking for one of these whenever
they were working on something. I sketched several
different types of these animals, but decided this one
was the most recognizable.
