An Evening in Peru-Dinner Party!

I have had many of you asking when our next dinner party/gallery talk would be.  Well, you don't have to wait much longer!  Our "Evening in Peru" will be
on Saturday February 23rd at 6PM.

Pete and Hannah Schneider will again be our chefs, and they
are planning some delicious appetizers, entrees, and desserts for
the occasion.  After we enjoy the meal, I will give a
gallery talk and slide show about our trip to Peru and
my resulting artwork.

We will start taking reservations now.  You can call the gallery and
reserve your spot.  The tickets are $35.00 and there will only be
30 spots available. I am looking forward to it, it should
be a great time.

Peru Blue Man

I am starting to near completion on this colored pencil drawing.  I may
leave the bottom corner unfinished.  It gives the illusion of
movement better than just a solid black surface.  The satin surface of
the costume has been very difficult...I am not sure I have it right
yet.  I may tweak a little more.  Overall, I am pretty pleased.  I loved
this photograph, and knew I wanted to do something with it. I love
the dynamic composition, and great colors.  You will be able to
see the original soon at the gallery.

I also need a title, if anyone wants to make a suggestion!

The Eagle is Landing

Adding a little at a time on this drawing...
mostly on his costume.

Detail of the eagle on the costume...fun to draw

I am still working on this Peruvian dancer.  I will have
a show at Christmas in the gallery of works from my trip
to Peru.  I already have a couple of watercolors, and I
will add this drawing to the mix (if I finish it in time!)

On the Fringe

Adding a little more to this drawing; some of the fringe.
It is very slow going....lots of little, bitty detail!  But it is not
like most of what I draw; a very different subject matter, so it is
fun for me.  Challenging as well.
We will see how it all turns out.

Travel Journal-Peru

Our Group in Peru   There were just 5 of us; Go Ahead Tours put us with the rest of the travelers

Edwin, our tour director

This is my group with Edwin: two friends from Winnfield, Sue and Charlotte;
my daughter, Hannah and her husband Pete

I realized I hadn't posted these pics of the whole group from the
trip to Peru.  I have been trying to work on the digital copy of the
book, and I wanted to include this group shot.  The digital copy
includes some of the paintings and sketches from my sketchbook,
and lots of my digital photos.  It will be ready in a couple of
weeks.  I will post about availability when I finish it.

Flower Woman Finalized

Cusco Market Flower Woman

I continued to work on this watercolor today.  I added
some more washes of color on her clothing.  Then I
worked on her face.  I put in the background last...
letting it overlap onto her clothes to tie them
together more.  I don't think I will add any more
details to the flowers; I kind of like them loose and
undefined.  I may work on her hands some more..they
are not quite right yet.

Watercolor can be very unforgiving!  That is one
reason a lot of artists do not care for it.  It is hard to
fix mistakes, and to "do over" some areas.  So,
you learn to do it right the first time! or learn
to like it the way it turns out!

I still teach some watercolor classes, if anyone is
interested in learning to tame this medium.  Or
at least giving it a try!  Just get in touch with
me at the gallery for a schedule of summer
classes.

Peruvian Artists

I always enjoy buying some original art
when I travel.  And I was delighted to find
so many watercolors down in Peru.  Our
tour director, Edwin, told us he had a friend
named Santos, and that we would meet him in
Cuzco.  Santos is an artist, and he paints in
watercolor and acrylic.  We did meet him, and
most of the group bought a painting from him.
I bought the one of the village.
I also found a little gallery in Aguas Calientes,
the town at the foot of Macchu Pichu.  I bought
the other watercolor of the field workers there. I
really like it...it is different from many of the
paintings that I saw.  And I also got to see examples
of people in the fields as we traveled around the
country, especially in the Sacred Valley.
nice work

Men at Work

Coming home from the fields late in the day

selling cantalopes

washing down the umbrella

playing the harp

bringing home some hay
I realized I had posted a lot of pics of
the women of Peru at work.  To be fair,
I did see some men at work as well.  In fact,
our guide told us that there is no welfare
system in Peru, and that the people must
work to earn money.  We did see people doing
all kinds of work all across the country.  Very
admirable indeed.
